Description

The excursion starts very early in the morning, with the local guide, with a taxi needed to reach the starting point where the walk begins.

When you get out of the taxi, 5 km later, the adventure begins. Walking in the dark almost an hour uphill to find "La Comunidad Los Acuáticos". From the porch of a country house, sitting, with a bit of luck, in a rocking chair, you will be able to enjoy a delicious coffee, or perhaps a juice, offered by the local farmer, and the magnificent view of the "Valle de la Penitencia" and on the "Valle del Palmarito" covered by fog, which occurs for most of the year at that time, you will have the privilege of seeing the sun rise from inside the mountains.

After enjoying the impressive views of the place and learning a little history about the local population, we will begin the return to the city of Viñales, through the Penitencia Valley to subsequently reach the "Valle Dos Hermanas" which ends near the Mural of Prehistory about 3 hours after the tour began. From that point we will take the taxi back to Viñales.

  On site:

"Los Acuáticos" is a very quiet place in the mountains around the Viñales Valley, where today only two families live, they are people who have their own traditions, habits impossible to describe in words even for the best writer or to print images as best possible with a camera, everything, absolutely worth seeing.

The Los Acuáticos Community is located on one of the slopes of the Cordillera de los Órganos, in the westernmost province of Cuba, and was founded in 1943 by Mrs. Antonia Izquierdo, who had long believed in the medicinal and therapeutic properties of water, to which the town owes its name. The last person who traditionally knew about the healing effects of water died in 2002. However, even if he failed to pass on his legacy to other generations, the inhabitants of the Community of Los Acuáticos continue to maintain their faith in this tradition. The excursion to Los Acuáticos is recommended not only from a cultural point of view, but also from a landscape point of view, since the 1 km stretch covering the distance from the Dos Hermanas exit to the town presents a great diversity of native plant species. ., perfect setting for the lifestyle and beliefs of the locals.

Degree of difficulty: medium.

Walking distance: about 5.9 km.

Approximate duration of the excursion (total): approximately 3 hours.

Excursion start time: From 05.30 to 06.30 depending on the season of the year.
